Who we are

Materialist is a curated directory of plastic-free products. We score products on a 0–100 scale based on materials and packaging. We are based in the UK. You can reach us at our contact page.

What we collect and why

Email address

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we store your email address. We use it only to send you Materialist updates. We will never sell, rent, or share your email with third parties. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email we send.

IP address (subscribe only)

When you subscribe, we temporarily record your IP address to prevent automated spam subscriptions (one subscription per IP per hour). We delete IP addresses from our subscriber records within 30 days of collection. We do not use IP addresses for any other purpose.

Wizard interaction data

When you use the product wizard on our homepage, we record anonymous interaction events (which life area you clicked, which products you viewed). These events are linked to a random session ID generated in your browser for the duration of your visit — not to you personally. No name, email, or persistent identifier is attached.

Affiliate click data

When you click a "Buy" link, we log which product and affiliate program was clicked, and the referring page on our site. We do not log your IP address or any personal identifier for affiliate clicks.

Local storage (browser)

We store a small amount of data in your browser's local storage to remember which life areas you've already switched in the wizard. This data never leaves your device and is not transmitted to our servers.

Cookies

We do not use tracking cookies or advertising cookies. Our authentication system (used only for admin access) may set a session cookie for signed-in editors. If you are a regular visitor, no cookies are set.

Third-party services

chevron_right Supabase — our database provider, hosted in the EU. Your email address is stored here.

chevron_right Clerk — handles admin authentication. Only used for internal editors, not regular visitors.

chevron_right Amazon Associates and other affiliate networks — when you click a Buy link, you are redirected to a third-party retailer. Their privacy policies apply from that point.

Affiliate disclosure

Materialist earns a commission when you purchase a product through our affiliate links. This does not affect our scores — products are assessed independently of any commercial relationship. Affiliate commissions are how we fund the site.

Your rights

If you are in the UK or EU, you have the right to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you. To exercise any of these rights, or to request that we stop processing your data, contact us at our contact page.

To unsubscribe from emails, use the unsubscribe link in any email we send, or visit /unsubscribe.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page if our data practices change. The date at the top of this page reflects the last revision.
